CCHS among top HS in state

CCRPI: CCHS
among best
in Georgia

Clinch County High is one of the top high schools in Georgia, according to a new index that ranks state schools.
Tuesday, the Georgia Department of Education rolled out its College & Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI), a new system to rate school performance, replacing AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress). The report card rates a school's performance on a scale of 0 to 100. Out of nearly 200 state high schools (grades 9-12), Clinch County High was tied for the 16th-best grade, of 85, in Georgia, and had the best ranking in the area. The state high school average was 72.6. Clinch's elementary school grade was 74.7, and its middle school score was 71.7. The state average for elementary schools was 83.4, and for middle schools, it was 81.4. The grades were partially based on test scores from the 2011-2012 school term.
"In an educator’s mind, an 85 is a B, and a B is pretty good to most people," said CCHS Principal Denise Brown. "It wasn’t until all the scores were released that we realized just how well we stacked up against everyone else. That’s when we really got excited. CCHS ranked number-one in our RESA district and 16th in the state of Georgia among high schools. We were also well above the state average, which was 72.6. I am extremely proud of the CCHS faculty/staff and our awesome students who put us on top once again. We always want to think our school is the best around, but now we have proof."
Breaking down the grade levels, Clinch's fifth-graders had an 89.3 grade, while grades three and four had a 67.1. Grades six and seven had a 81.8 score. Eighth-grade, which is at the high school but not considered part of CCHS in the grading, had a score of 66.6. The report included grades 3-5 as elementary school, grades 6-8 as middle school, and 9-12 as high school.
"Our system has reason for celebration. The index reports some excellent scores," said Clinch Schools Superintendent Dr. Gayle Hughes. "We have areas in which we need to improve. We will. The standardized test scores that are part of this index are the 2011-2012 test scores. We received these scores in the spring of 2011. Teachers have worked on the areas of lower scores throughout the school year. I think that we will see evidence of improvement in these areas when we receive the results of this spring's test administration. I am confident that our educators will meet the challenges of this new accountability measure."
Under CCRPI, schools and districts can get up to 70 points for academic achievement, 15 points for academic progress, and 15 points in the achievement gap area. Another 10  points are considered "challenge" points, which can be earned by offering specific academic and extracurricular programs and by improving the performance of students with disabilities and those with limited English skills.
